The Experience
The Okavango Panhandle forms the main watercourse that feeds the iconic Okavango Delta from the highlands of Angola. While not part of a designated reserve or national park, this region boasts vast stretches of unspoiled wetlands, papyrus-lined lagoons, and rich biodiversity.
Visitors can look forward to sightings of hippos, massive crocodiles, and elusive aquatic antelope species like the sitatunga, known for their shy nature and excellent swimming abilities. The tall, shady riverine forests provide a lush habitat for a remarkable variety of wildlife.
Birdwatching in the Panhandle is exceptional. Notable species include the rare Pel’s Fishing Owl, White-backed Night-Heron, African Skimmer, Black-faced Babbler, Brown Firefinch, and the majestic Western Banded Snake-Eagle. During the summer months, keep an eye out for the vibrant Carmine Bee-eaters, which gather in large flocks to nest along the vertical riverbanks.
The Panhandle’s fast-flowing, deep channels are ideal for fishing enthusiasts. The annual barbel run—when large schools of catfish migrate upstream—creates a feeding frenzy that attracts the legendary tiger fish, making it one of the best fishing spectacles in Southern Africa. The peak season for anglers is between September and October.
