What is a Mokoro?
A mokoro is a traditional canoe used in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, originally carved from tree trunks and now often made of fibreglass. Guided by local experts using poles, mokoros offer a quiet, eco-friendly way to navigate the delta for transport, fishing, and wildlife viewing, particularly birds and to some extent domestic animals. Used for over 2,000 years by the Hambukushu and Bayei people, mokoros remain a vital cultural tool.
